Beijing Transportation – Bus, Taxi, Bicycle, Subway and More

Beijing Transportation - Beijing is HUGE!

Compared to the “little red dot” known as Singapore where I came from, Beijing is big and there are many places to visit. This is especially so for first-time visitors to this wonderful city.

There are many ways to travel within Beijing. You can get to your destination by train/subway, bus, car, bicycle and etc. Best of all, taking public transportation is also a great way to mingle with the locals and taste what it’s like to be one of them.

And to many, it is a great opportunity to take photographs as you pass by the old and modern architecture of this unique city.

With the forthcoming Olympics 2008 held in Beijing, the transportation within Beijing has improved considerably. This has also made life much easier for the locals as the public transportation system has been refined to ensure that Beijing puts on its best for their important day.

And much consideration has been thought through by the local central government to ensure that Foreign Tourists have an easier time navigating within Beijing, especially for the Olympics 2008.

For tourists who cannot speak the Chinese language, one must take more caution while traveling within Beijing City.

Though many residents of Beijing know conversational English, one should not count on finding a taxi driver who knows English well.

Neither should a foreigner with minimal experience with the Chinese language put undue faith in his or her ability to pronounce Chinese place names so that a local can understand clearly.

Getting Around Beijing Tips

Before embarking on a trip around the city,

  • Print out the names of places you want to visit in Chinese characters.
  • Show the text to the taxi driver,
  • Just ask for help on the street.

You have more chance to get help in English if you address younger people, as many schools in China have expanded their English education in the last few years.
