Beijing Vegetarian Restaurants - A Monk’s Food Paradise!
Beijing Vegetarian Restaurants – I don’t take much vegetable in Singapore. I am your normal carnivorous meat-eater, devouring large amount meat especially during BBQ cookouts. The only vegetables I take are chili and potatoes. That’s about it. Until I met my wife! She is not a vegetarian but she tries to stay slim by eating vegetables. And because of her, I got to know some good vegetarian restaurants in Beijing. Today, I will be recommending my one of my favourite Beijing Vegetarian Restaurants - Baihe Sushi or known to some of us as Lily Vegetarian Restaurant.
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting muchwhen my wife told me that Baihe Sushi is one of the best vegetarianrestaurants in the city. To me, I just love the taste of meat, andvegetables can’t do it for me. With trepidations, I went inside the restaurant. Well, it was really clean just like those restaurants in Singapore (not that common in Beijing). The first thing that caught my eyes - Monks! There were many monks in the restaurant, in their yellow robes, enjoying the food. I thought there was a Hare Krishna convention nearby the restaurant! My wife told me that the restaurant offers the food for FREE to the Monks. Wow! The Monks do know where to find good food for free! Let’s get to the main issue. How’s the food? My wife, to be safe, ordered some of the restaurant’s recommended dishes for my tasting pleasure. We had: - Yam Broth with Mushrooms - "Shan Yao Geng"
- Asparagus Salad - "Liang Ban Zi Lu Sun"
- Sushi Rolls - "Ru Yi Hai Tai Juan"
- Imperial Bamboo Shoots and Mocked Meatballs - "Huang Di Sun Shao Wan Zi"
- Any Tofu dishes
- Any Mushrooms dishes – "Xiang Gu" (mushrooms, Superb and I don’t even like mushrooms in the beginning!)
Note: Anyway, you can also ask for organic vegetables, depending on the seasons. The food was FANTASTIC!
It is unbelievable what they can do without meat. The seasoning was done just right and I actually feel good after eating the heavy meal. This is not the case with my BBQs and curry chicken binges. Compared to Singapore’s vegetarian restaurants which served mostly gluten-based mocked meats, Baihe Sushi does it so much better without the hassle of making vegetarian food looking like meat. This place will convert many meat-eaters to vegetarianism if we can have the chefs back in our kitchen. I am not in a hurry to convert but if I ever do, it could be due to Baihe Sushi!
