Shopping in Beijing – Shopoholics Alert!
Shopping in Beijing – My wife loves shopping in Beijing (ok, basically everywhere!). She is probably the best person I know to talk about shopping. And she is a good negotiator. How to bargain here? (Click here to learn some Simple Chinese Conversation for Shopping) According to my wife, it is advisable to divide the shop owner’s asking price by half. However, this does not apply to shopping at FIXED PRICE shops.
My wife also said that if the shopowber dies not budge, try walking awy from the shop as if you’re not interested anymore. Usually, if they want to sell to you, they will call you back for another round of negotiation. One more thing is if whatever price you asked is agreed by theshopowner, you need to honor the deal by buying at that price. Or else, you may face problems. So, before you really start bargaining hard, visit different shops to compare prices for the particular product. By doing so, you will at least know the ball park price. Besides bargaining, my wife wants me to remind all of you to be careful while shopping. In Beijing, many tourists have been known to be victims of pickpockets. Sometimes, the pickpockets are in cahoots with theshopowners. So, please be extra careful and keep you wallet/bag close to you when buying stuff. This is especailly so when shopping at flea markets or shops along less established areas. Be careful of counterfeit notes too! You can read more about that here. Enough of depressing issues while shopping. Let’s get to the fun part. Here are few places where you can shop for certain items, according to my wife. I will be adding more stuff by the day.
