Top Hotels in Beijing – The Not-so-Great Great Wall Sheraton Hotel
Top Hotels in Beijing Pick– Next on the list is the Great Wall Sheraton Hotel. Great Wall Sheraton Hotel is the less expensive hotel of this 5 star category (Note: Average price tag – US$190). Situated on the eastern 3rd Ring Road, it is only 45 minutes from the Beijing Capital Airport by cab. It is also a 20 minutes taxi ride to the Forbidden City.
Overall, the hotel rooms are comfortable but have small bathrooms (you’ll expect something bigger from top hotels in beijing). This is probably why the price is lower compared to the rest. The hotel’s staff was pleasant but English was an issue in the upper level Chinese restaurant. Usually in 4 and 5 star hotels, you do expect staff who can converse fairly well in English but this was not the case here. Thus, I feel that there is a need to train their staff better especially dealing with English-speaking visitors, as it can be a pain in the neck trying to ask for a Jim Beam with Cola. Anyway, if it matters to you, there is Hard Rock Cafe Beijing which is located between the Sheraton and the Kempinski hotels. Now, let my friends tell you more. Positive Comments – “I like the hotel as it is not so far from the airport.” “Overall, the hotel staffs are helpful and speak reasonably good English.” “We had a good Breakfast buffet and in general, the food was good at the hotel.” “The gym is relatively big, however the equipments are old but usable. Personal trainers are offered here and a good indoor pool” “The Executive Floor lounge and rooms are great. More importantly, the concierges make helpful recommendations and preparations regarding where to go for a truly enjoyable trip. His recommendations really made the difference!” Why Great Wall Sheraton Hotel should not be listed in Top Hotels in Beijing?
Negative Comments – “No 5 star decor and the bar at the 7-storey lobby is pathetic!” “The whole hotel needs refurbishing. It was run-down when I was there (April 2007). It is not what I paid for.” “The house cleaning was appalling. My wife found a condom wrapper as a souvenir under the bed. It wasn’t a good start.” “Do not bother going there. There are enough hotels for the price youare paying.” “I paid US$3.5 for 10 minutes of Internet time at the Executive Lounge. The next time (if there is another time), I will just pop down to the Internet Cafe outside the hotel and pay the same amount for 5 hours.” Overall Rating for Great Wall Sheraton Hotel – 6.5 out of 10 (some of my more critical friends will disagree with this) NO.10, North Dong San Huan Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing 100026, P.R.C.
